10 Ways to Honor Black History Month

Really, Black culture and excellence should be studied and celebrated all year long!

Here are some simple things you can do in your house to celebrate Black History Month, this month and every month:

  • Study prominent Black playwrights throughout history and today like Lorraine Hansberry, James Baldwin, August Wilson, Jeremy O. Harris, Brandon Jacobs Jenkins, Lynn Nottage, and Suzan-Lori Parks.

  • Read classic plays like A Raisin in the Sun, Fences, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and modern plays like White Noise, Slave Play, An Octoroon, and Sweat.

  • Support a theatre in town like The Renaissance Guild, San Antonio’s premiere Black theatre company, or see Thurgood, the true story of the first African American Supreme Curt Justice, Thurgood Marshall- playing online at The Public Theatre of San Antonio.

  • Educate yourself on influential Black and African American people together by purchasing books from San Antonio’s Black female owned bookstore, Angie K Books.

  • Watch films on Black history. Our local PBS station, KLRN has a line-up of offerings to stream online, or to view on scheduled programming. Streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu also have a collection of Black stories to choose from.

  • There are many anti-racist books you can read to further your own knowledge on the Black experience.

  • Educate yourself, show up, and listen. Practice anti-racism and acceptance in your own household and commit to personal action to bring more equity, justice, and inclusion to our world.
