On a once grand country estate, in Tsarist Russia, the arrival of Professor

Serebriakov and his beautiful young wife, Yelena, throws the residents’ lives

for him for many years, only to discover that the professor now has intentions

to sell the property, which will leave him and his niece, Sonya, homeless and

penniless. The arrival of the dashing Doctor Astrov furthers the tension in the

household as both he and Vanya compete for Yelena’s affections. Rich in
