On a once grand country estate, in Tsarist Russia, the arrival of Professor Serebriakov and his beautiful young wife, Yelena, throws the residents’ lives into chaos. Serebriakov’s brother-in-law, Uncle Vanya has toiled on the farm for him for many years, only to discover that the professor now has intentions to sell the property, which will leave him and his niece, Sonya, homeless and penniless. The arrival of the dashing Doctor Astrov furthers the tension in the household as both he and Vanya compete for Yelena’s affections. Rich in language and emotion, Uncle Vanya is a passionate character study that expertly weaves laughs and heartbreak as it showcases one of the greatest roles in the theatrical canon.
“Oh, it’s much more that just caretaking and tree planting. Don’t you understand, darling? That man has genius! Do you know what genius means?” -Yelena
